Meet SEWN member…
There may be only one ferry but many life roads lead to the Sunshine Coast.
For Christina Stewart, love was the road that brought her to lower Gibsons in 2002. She grew up in Toronto but in 1994 packed up her white Grand AM and headed west with no particular agenda or destination. One morning she woke up in Penticton and for the next eight years built her life and career in the Okanagan. Then one evening in 2002 Christina was out with a friend from Roberts Creek when they ran into a group of young men from The Coast. One handshake and two beautiful blue eyes later and Christina was hooked.
Two short months after that first encounter with Drew, who is now her husband, she once again packed up and headed a bit further West — to Gibsons – but this time it took a full 5 ton moving truck.
The family now includes three children under the age of 10, who are a huge part of the reason Christina loves living in a place where she can find balance in life, while still pursuing a successful career as an HR consultant.
Christina came to HR through journalism and has been a writer, in one way or another, for 20 years. When the kids were born, and she was home on maternity leave, she did what lots of young moms do: looked for a way to keep her brain engaged, her bank balance in the black and join her two loves – HR and writing. That brought her to writing HR manuals for start-ups who needed help and was her first foray into entrepreneurship. She now runs an HR Outsourcing firm called Praxis Performance Group www.praxisgroup.ca, a joint venture with her husband.
“We both adore researching and sharing information/training”, says Christina. “In 2014 we thought we would make a full leap to both of us as Entrepreneurs and do what we love to do – but do it together! Praxis literally means translating ideas into action – which is what we do for our clients – they bring us ideas about their people and we help make it happen in tangible ways. We also do a great deal of training business leaders in what we call HR 101; how to hire, fire, engage, manage, build and lead teams. We do this work across Canada but our focus and our hope is to do more of it here. We think The Coast is ready for a full-service Human Resource Company.”
Joining SEWN allows Christina to share knowledge, which is one of her passions. She is hungry for other people’s accounts of their experiences, and is generous in offering her knowledge to others. In other words, “I’ll conduct any sessions that might be helpful – how to hire, how to fire, how to manage conflict, respect and harassment workshops. I’ll share what I can with business owners who have employees and want some information on how best to manage those relationships.”
